Mr William THOMAS MS FRCS

Leisure interests

  • I am married to Grace with 5 children and 13 grandchildren – my family is my life!
  • I am a passionate skier and own an apartment in Flaine, France which all the family enjoy.
  • My more sedentary hobby is oil painting and am now able to commit more time to this most relaxing and productive past-time.
  • I am a committed Christian and am very active in my local church and a member of the Christian Medical Fellowship. For 24 years I ran the Pathfinder Group (11-14 Years of age) at Christ Church Fulwood in Sheffield and served as Warden (Elder) there for 11 years during different terms of office. I am a lay preacher and much of my time has been spent working with The Gideons International, having joined in 1972 (see separate page on website).
  • I have a deep interest and commitment to relief work overseas especially in Romania and the continent of Africa. I had the opportunity of visiting the hospital in Rimnicu Vilcea (north west of Bucharest) following the revolution in 1989 and have forged strong links with the Romanian surgeons. With the assistance of the Education Department of the Royal College of Surgeons of England we have also been able to provide the University Hospital in Iasi with educational tools and resources. My passion for surgical education in developing countries has been the basis for me being part of the Founding Council and Executive Board of  the International Collaboration for Essential Surgery. Having developed the Basic Surgical Skills Course for the Royal College of Surgeons in 1993, I have taken surgical skills courses and workshops to over 30 developing countries and our surgical teaching material has been circulated to 52 different countries. Currently I have the privilege of Chairing the Senior Fellows Society of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
